"There is no such thing as Palestine in (Arab) history, absolutely not"
(Professor Philip Hitti, distinguished Arab historian, testified before the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry convened in Jerusalem in 1946)
Hitti even expressed his opposition to using the word "Palestine" in maps because, in his words, it was assotiated in the mind of the average American, and perhaps the Englishman too, with the Jews. This distinguished Princeton University professor could hardly be accused of acting as a Zionist spokesman.
Nine years earlier [1937], a noted local Arab leader, Auni Bey Abdul-Hadi, told the Peel Commission, which recommended the partition of Mandatory Western Palestine:
"There is no such country [as Palestine]! 'Palestine' is a term the Zionists invented! There is no Palestine in the Bible. 'Palestine' is alien to us; it is the Zionists who introduced it."

Турецкий вилайет, из которого при разделе мандатов вырезали Палестину, Сирию и Ливан, а потом и Трансиорданию, назывался "Сирией" и своих денег не печатал, AFAIK.
